Apple’s $3,500 Vision Pro: Gathering Dust, Not Users!
So, Apple’s Vision Pro headset, the one that was supposed to revolutionize how we interact with the digital world? Yeah, not so much. Turns out, strapping a pricey, heavy computer to your face isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time.
Initial excitement fizzled out faster than you can say “augmented reality.” Reviewers found the headset uncomfortable for extended use, the $3,500 price tag hard to swallow, and the content, well, underwhelming. Even folks at MacRumors, a website dedicated to all things Apple, are letting their Vision Pros collect dust. Watching movies on a giant virtual screen is cool, but not when you’re isolated from the real world – including your cat!
This affects Apple, of course, who hoped for a hit product. It also impacts the future of their augmented reality (AR) glasses ambitions. The Vision Pro was meant to pave the way for lightweight AR glasses, but if the bulky headset can’t find an audience, what hope do glasses have?
Even Apple CEO Tim Cook, who’s been touting AR’s potential for years, has admitted that the tech isn’t quite there yet for “quality” AR glasses. And let’s not forget Meta (formerly Facebook), who’ve been pouring billions into their own AR glasses project. Their prototype, “Orion,” looks more like regular glasses than the Vision Pro, but it costs a whopping $10,000 to make! So, yeah, AR glasses are still a ways off for everyone.
So, what’s next for Apple and the future of face computers? Will they try a cheaper Vision Pro? Or maybe some simpler “smart glasses” with a camera and Siri? Only time will tell. But for now, the dream of seamlessly blending the digital and physical worlds remains just that – a dream.
