WhatsApp Introduces User Tagging in Status Updates

WhatsApp Turns into a High School Yearbook, Now With Tagging!

Well, folks, it seems like WhatsApp’s decided to take a page out of Instagram’s – or maybe your high school yearbook’s – playbook. They’ve rolled out this new feature where you can tag people in your Status updates. Yep, just like you used to circle your friends’ faces with glitter pens and write “BFF” next to them, now you can digitally tag your buddies in your fleeting moments of online existence.

So, who does this affect? Well, pretty much anyone who uses WhatsApp and enjoys the thrill of being acknowledged in a 24-hour disappearing post. You can tag up to five people – hopefully, your “Top 5 Besties” list is already curated. And don’t worry, WhatsApp claims they’ve got privacy controls in place. Because apparently, there’s a need to tag someone without actually, you know, letting anyone see who you tagged.

But wait, there’s more! In a relentless pursuit of mimicking Instagram Stories, WhatsApp’s also adding a “like” feature. Now you can give your friends a little digital thumbs-up on their Status updates, you know, instead of actually crafting a sentence or two expressing your thoughts. Efficiency, people!

Apparently, WhatsApp, the company owned by Meta – because apparently one social media giant wasn’t enough – is trying to make it “easier to reach the people who matter most.” Because apparently, sending a private message is too much effort these days.

This whole Status update extravaganza comes hot on the heels of some other new features, like filters and backgrounds for video calls. Because we all need to look like we’re on a tropical beach, even if we’re actually just sitting in our pajamas on the couch.

So, there you have it. WhatsApp’s latest attempt to keep up with the cool kids. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go update my Top 8 friends list.
