The Wild Robot opens at the top of the box office

“The Wild Robot” Roars to the Top of the Box Office, Outperforming Coppola’s “Megalopolis”

Family-friendly films continue to dominate the box office, with DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” claiming the number one spot this weekend. The animated feature, boasting a star-studded voice cast including Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal, brought in $35 million in its opening weekend. While not reaching the heights of “Inside Out 2’s” $62 million debut, “The Wild Robot’s” success is notable, especially considering the trend of sequels and established franchises dominating the box office this year.

“The Wild Robot’s” performance is even more impressive when compared to other new releases. It significantly outperformed Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis”, which opened to a disappointing $4 million despite a wider theatrical release. This suggests that audience interest in original animated content remains strong, even against big-name directors and established IP.

Another interesting point is that “The Wild Robot’s” success gives Catherine O’Hara the distinction of having the top two films at the box office, as she also voices a character in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, which landed in second place this weekend.

Here’s a look at the top 10 films at the box office this weekend:

  1. “The Wild Robot”, $35 million
  2. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, $16.04 million
  3. “Transformers One”, $9.3 million
  4. “Devara Part One”, $5.6 million
  5. “Speak No Evil”, $4.3 million
  6. “Megalopolis”, $4 million
  7. “Deadpool & Wolverine”, $2.66 million
  8. “My Old Ass”, $2.22 million
  9. “Never Let Go”, $2.2 million
  10. “The Substance”, $1.81 million
