Live-Action “Rugrats” Movie in the Works: Get Ready for Diaper-Clad Chaos
Hold onto your Reptar bars, folks, because a live-action “Rugrats” movie is officially in development. That’s right, the beloved 90s cartoon about a group of adventurous babies is getting a real-world makeover, and it’s raising more questions than Angelica’s Cynthia doll has outfits.
This news comes after a series of “Rugrats” reboots, including a recent CG animated series that was swiftly removed from Paramount+. Apparently, Hollywood can’t resist the urge to bring these characters back to life, as long as there’s money to be made.
But what exactly does a live-action “Rugrats” entail? Will it be a hyperrealistic CGI spectacle like “The Lion King,” or will we see actual babies crawling around with adult voiceovers like in “Look Who’s Talking?” The possibilities are both intriguing and slightly terrifying.
The project has tapped Jason Moore, director of “Pitch Perfect” and “Shotgun Wedding,” to helm the film. The script will be written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, the “Saturday Night Live” duo known for sketches like “David S. Pumpkins.” They’ve also worked on family-friendly projects like the Disney+ “Home Alone” reboot and were at one point attached to an “Inspector Gadget” reboot.
Whether or not this live-action adaptation will capture the magic of the original “Rugrats” (especially the cinematic masterpiece that is “Rugrats In Paris”) remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure: it’s going to be a wild ride.
