The Crooked Man banished to VOD release

Hellboy Ditches Theaters, Heads Straight to Your Couch!

The upcoming “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is skipping the big screen and going straight to video on demand this October 8th! This might be a bummer for fans hoping to see Hellboy on the big screen, especially since the film only saw a limited release in a few countries. But this change also reflects a shift towards smaller-budget superhero films that don’t need to rely on massive box office returns.

This new “Hellboy” film has a significantly smaller budget than previous installments like the 2019 reboot or “The Golden Army”. It’s directed by Brian Taylor, known for his work on “Crank: High Voltage”, and focuses on adapting one of Hellboy’s earlier, more grounded adventures. This could be a good thing for fans who prefer the character’s paranormal investigator roots over big, bombastic action sequences.

What’s particularly interesting is that creator Mike Mignola has expressed excitement about this adaptation, saying it’s the closest a film has come to capturing his vision for the character. In previous adaptations, directors like Guillermo del Toro put their unique spin on the character. This time, Mignola’s involvement as a screenwriter could mean a more faithful translation from comic to screen.

So, while a VOD release might seem like a step down for some, it could be an exciting opportunity to see a more focused, character-driven “Hellboy” story that truly reflects the creator’s vision. Plus, who doesn’t love a good movie night at home?
