Pull some cotton from a q-tip. Lift the impinging nail with a toothpick, nail file (or whatever). Shove the cotton under. This provided instant relief, allows the skin under to heal, and the nail to (perhaps) grow out normally, and (perhaps) avoid surgery. Then, don't cut the nail too short in the future. Instinct is to cut away the nail that is digging into the skin and hurting, but it's important to let it grow out.
I had enough pain and discomfort I was about to go back to my doctor. For some reason I decided to try this product. And now I'm pain free. The product seems to slowly soften the nail in the affected area, so it is unable to continue pressing into the flesh, causing the pain of an ingrown nail. After a week or two, you may be able to carefully trim the nail or just keep an eye on it. I trimmed a tiny bit of the nail and followed up with antibiotic ointment for a few days, to prevent infection. I would highly recommend this product.
One warning: In my opinion, if you have an infection already, severe redness, puss or swelling, you may want to see a doctor and see if antibiotics are called for before self-treating. My case had not progressed that far, so this stuff was great.
The drops are expensive, but worth it. Within two days, the skin was drying up over the ingrown toenail and the nail itself had softened significantly. While it still wasn't pleasant to dig the toenail out again (it never is), it was easier than before. By using this every day, he's actually been able to keep the toenail out of the skin (with cotton and constant care), which was a loosing battle before. After a couple weeks of use, even the swelling is gone and he's pain free.
We will have to keep using this drops for awhile, and he will have to remain diligent in the care of his toes...but it's the first real sign of hope we've had that this might be something which can be brought under control without surgery to remove the skin area. (We've had his nail partially and completely removed more than once) So, thumbs up to this product!
Why the negative reviews? Well, it probably does not work for some - But SHAME ON the negative reviewers who simply don't know how to use the applicator. They are discouraging others who could be helped because they don't know how to use the applicator.
You do NOT use the applicator like a "brush" to "paint" on the product! The applicator is a thin piece of plastic to be inserted BETWEEN the nail and the skin (on the side of the nail, not the top of the nail.) Do not try to paint the entire nail with the applicator as though it were a "brush. Don't worry, as sore as my toe was I had NO PAIN applying the product with the thin plastic applicator provided. After application, you can see the liquid in the groove where the toenail meets the skin.
I cheated and used it more than twice the first day. I don't think you can "overdose" and the relief was so welcome that I used it more than the recommended twice a day with no ill results.
I LOVE this stuff. Who cares if it costs more than Dr. Scholl's because it works. It is cheaper than a foot Doctor. Yes, I had my ingrown toenail treated by a foot Doctor, but the treatment only lasted six months then returned. So this stuff is cheaper than a foot Doctor, and it uses so little for each application that one bottle will last for years.
