One killer clown takes down another at the weekend box office

“Terrifier 3” Slays the Box Office, Leaving “Joker: Folie à Deux” in the Dust

The weekend box office saw a surprising upset as the low-budget horror film “Terrifier 3” dominated, raking in $18.3 million on its opening weekend. This indie slasher flick vastly outperformed “Joker: Folie À Deux,” which experienced a record-breaking drop for a comic book movie in its second weekend, earning a mere $7 million.

This shift highlights a fascinating trend in the film industry. While “Joker: Folie à Deux,” a sequel to a film that previously ruled the box office, faltered dramatically, “Terrifier 3” proves that a smaller budget and a dedicated fan base can lead to significant success.

“Terrifier 3’s” performance showcases its appeal among horror movie fans, who propelled it to the top spot, surpassing even established franchises and studio-backed productions. Other notable films this weekend include the animated “The Wild Robot” at number two and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” holding strong at number four.

Several awards contenders also made their debut, but with less impressive results. “Saturday Night,” a film about Saturday Night Live, and “The Apprentice,” a biopic about Donald Trump, both landed outside the top five. Meanwhile, “We Live In Time,” despite a limited release, achieved the highest per-theater average.

Here’s a look at the top ten films at the box office for the weekend of October 11-13, 2024:

  1. Terrifer 3, $18,300,000
