Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Use iPhone Mirroring on a Corporate Mac

Your Boss Might Be Spying on Your Tinder – Thanks, Apple!

Folks, you know how Apple’s always trying to make our lives easier, more connected, more “seamless?” Well, their new iPhone Mirroring feature in macOS Sequoia might just be a little *too* seamless for comfort. Turns out, it could be accidentally leaking your personal app data to your company’s IT department. That’s right – your secret Candy Crush addiction? Busted. That meditation app you use to unwind after a stressful meeting? Corporate knows. And that dating app you’re hoping will finally score you a date? Yeah, your boss might be seeing that too.

Security firm Sevco found a major oopsie in how iPhone Mirroring handles app metadata. When you mirror your iPhone to your Mac, it creates little “app stubs” on your computer. These stubs are like digital footprints of your iPhone apps – they don’t contain the whole app, but they do have things like the app’s name, icon, and version. And guess what? Your company’s security software can see these stubs, just like it sees all your other Mac apps.

So, if you’re using a company Mac, your personal iPhone apps could be showing up in their software inventory. Sevco even showed how easy it is to find this data using a simple command in the Mac Terminal. It’s like leaving your phone unlocked on your desk – except your entire IT department has the key.

Now, Apple’s been told about this issue and is supposedly working on a fix. But until then, you might want to think twice before using iPhone Mirroring on your work computer. And if you’re in charge of IT, maybe consider disabling the feature entirely. Because nothing says “trustworthy employer” like accidentally snooping on your employees’ dating profiles.
