Francis Ford Coppola thinks about the Roman Empire “quite a lot”

Francis Ford Coppola REALLY Likes The Roman Empire

Turns out, Francis Ford Coppola, the director of movies like “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now”, thinks about the Roman Empire quite a bit. Like, a LOT. He even said it’s a major inspiration for his new movie, “Megalopolis”.

This isn’t a huge surprise, since “Megalopolis” is all about the fall of the Roman Republic, and even the characters have names taken from that time period. Well, except for Aubrey Plaza’s character, Wow Platinum – she’s named after some fashionable Southern lady Coppola met.

Coppola straight-up said: “The Roman Republic served as the example for my country America and its institutions, and was the inspiration for Megalopolis. My fascination with the Roman Republic is based on the struggle between the political parties during which the interest of the Republic yielded to the ambitions of a few powerful men who espoused the aims of political parties to establish their own fortunes and authority by relying upon armed forces to achieve those ends, dealing the final blow to a constitution already tottering to its fall.”

That’s some serious Roman Empire love right there! In a quick Q&A session on Twitter, Coppola also mentioned that “Rumblefish” is his favorite movie he’s made, and plugged his Letterboxd account. Dude’s a legend, but he’s still gotta get the word out about his projects.
