Despite delays, Bong Joon-ho confirms he got final cut of Mickey 17

Bong Joon-ho Retains Final Cut Control Over “Mickey 17” Despite Release Delay

The upcoming sci-fi film “Mickey 17” from acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho has been the subject of much speculation, particularly regarding its release date. Originally slated for March 2024, the film, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pushed to January 2025 following the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. This delay led to rumors of conflict with Warner Bros. over creative control.

However, Bong has dispelled these rumors in a recent interview, confirming that he retained final cut rights for “Mickey 17,” just as he did for his previous film “Okja.” He emphasized that while discussions and differing opinions are part of the editing process, the studio respected his vision, leading to a smooth and respectful collaboration.

The January 2025 release, while unusual for a potential awards contender, was strategically chosen to coincide with the Lunar New Year in South Korea, Bong’s home country. Additionally, it allows the film to secure IMAX screenings during a typically less crowded time for theatrical releases.

Despite the unconventional release date, the fact that Warner Bros. granted Bong final cut for a film of this scale is notable. Robert Pattinson himself expressed admiration for the studio’s willingness to support Bong’s artistic vision, resulting in a film he describes as “incredibly unusual.” This suggests that “Mickey 17” will likely retain the distinct style and storytelling that has come to define Bong’s work, even within the context of a major studio release.
