Blumhouse, Casey Affleck making AI short films with Meta

Hollywood Embraces AI: Blumhouse Partners with Meta’s Movie Gen!

The film industry is buzzing with the latest AI development! Blumhouse, the production company known for horror hits like “Paranormal Activity” and “Get Out”, has teamed up with Meta to explore the potential of their new AI video generator, Movie Gen.

This partnership is a significant step in Hollywood’s ongoing exploration of AI, a topic that was a major point of contention during the recent writers and actors strikes. Meta’s Movie Gen aims to “democratize filmmaking” by allowing anyone to create videos, and to help established filmmakers work faster and cheaper.

But what does this mean for filmmakers and the creative community? Well, Blumhouse brought in directors like Aneesh Chaganty (“Searching”, “Run”) to test out the technology and provide feedback. Initially skeptical, Chaganty admitted that Movie Gen could potentially push filmmakers to “dream a little bigger.”

However, some see this partnership as a form of “propaganda”. Concerns remain about the environmental impact of AI, with reports suggesting its massive energy consumption could worsen the climate crisis. Additionally, the quality of AI-generated imagery, while constantly improving, still isn’t perfect.

Meta emphasizes that Movie Gen is meant to be an “assistant” to creators, not a replacement. Yet, filmmakers like Casey Affleck describe the experience as more of a “collaboration” than simply using a tool. It’s clear that AI is making its mark on filmmaking, and the long-term effects remain to be seen.
