Bird trailer: Barry Keoghan is a derelict dad in Andrea Arnold’s film

Barry Keoghan Explores Unconventional Fatherhood in Andrea Arnold’s “Bird”

Get ready for a raw and captivating performance from Barry Keoghan! The Oscar-nominated actor is taking on the role of a non-traditional father in Andrea Arnold’s new film “Bird”, premiering in theaters on November 8th. This film definitely won’t be a walk in the park for Keoghan, who had a unique approach to preparing for the role due to his own experiences growing up without a father figure.

The film follows the story of Bailey, a young girl living in a rundown town whose life is transformed by the arrival of a vagrant named Bird, played by Franz Rogowski. Bailey’s father, played by Keoghan, is caught up in questionable schemes – like trying to sell toad venom – leaving Bailey feeling isolated. The film dives into the complex dynamics of this unconventional family, all while showcasing the beauty of the natural world that surrounds Bailey.

Director Andrea Arnold is known for her naturalistic style, and “Bird” promises to be no exception. Keoghan, who spoke with “IndieWire” about his experience working with Arnold, shared that her process is incredibly immersive. She doesn’t provide a traditional script and expects actors to be spontaneous and instinctive, encouraging them to tap into a deeper level of honesty and authenticity.

Keoghan elaborated on the challenges and nuances of embodying fatherhood in an interview with “Entertainment Weekly” at TIFF. He candidly explained, “I’ll just say this—I didn’t have a father figure growing up, so even my relationship with my son isn’t quite of the normal father-son relationship, because I don’t have that figure to draw experience from and to base it on.” He further acknowledges the complexities within those relationships, stating, “Love, you don’t need anything to draw from, love is pure, and so I’m not on about that, but I’m on about little stuff like teaching your son this or teaching your daughter that.” It’s clear that Keoghan is tapping into his personal journey in his portrayal of this unique father-daughter relationship in “Bird”.
