So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye… to the Disc Drive That Time Forgot!
Folks, it’s official. Apple’s decided that the era of spinning discs is over, like bell bottoms and dial-up internet. That’s right, the SuperDrive, the external CD/DVD drive that’s been hanging around like that friend who crashes on your couch for “a few days” and never leaves, has gone the way of the dodo.
This little relic, first introduced in 2008 when the MacBook Air was too cool for a built-in disc drive, has finally been put out to pasture. Apparently, Apple figured that in the age of streaming and cloud storage, nobody needs to be lugging around a USB-A cable just to watch a movie.
And let’s be honest, they’re probably right. CD/DVD drives are about as relevant these days as a rotary phone. But there’s something a little sad about it, isn’t there? It’s like the end of an era, a reminder that technology moves fast and leaves behind those who can’t keep up.
But don’t worry, if you’re a real hipster and still burn mix CDs for your vintage boombox, you can still find other CD/DVD drives out there. Just don’t expect Apple to be the one selling them to you. They’ve got their eyes on the shiny future, a future where everything is wireless and data is stored in the ether.
So, pour one out for the SuperDrive, the little disc drive that could. It may be gone, but it won’t be forgotten. At least, not by those of us who remember a time when installing software meant more than clicking a button.
