Apple Secretly Developed Long-Range EV Battery Tech with China’s BYD

Apple’s Secret Chinese Battery Rendezvous Goes Bust!

So, Apple, the company that’s always gotta be different, tried to build a car. And they thought, “Who makes great batteries? China!” Enter BYD, the Chinese automaker that’s like the cool kid on the electric vehicle block.

Turns out, Apple and BYD had a secret love affair, a battery bromance, if you will. They started hooking up around 2017, whispering sweet nothings about lithium iron phosphate cells and long-range batteries. Apple, with their fancy battery packs and heat management, and BYD, with their manufacturing muscle and LFP know-how, were supposed to be the power couple of the EV world.

But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Apple, after dumping a billion dollars a year into this car project for a decade, decided to call it quits in February 2024. Apparently, building a car is harder than designing a shiny new phone.

So, what happened to the battery baby of this failed relationship? Well, BYD seems to be doing just fine, with their Blade batteries making waves in the industry. And Apple? They’re not crying over spilled electrolyte. Rumors say they’re using the battery tech they developed with BYD for other things, like the Vision Pro headset and their Neural Engine AI processor.

The moral of the story? Even when Apple tries to be secretive and innovative, sometimes things just don’t work out. But hey, at least they got some cool gadgets out of it. And who knows, maybe one day they’ll try building a car again. But this time, maybe they’ll just buy the batteries from someone else.
