Apple Announces New Klarna and PayPal Integrations for Apple Pay on iOS 18

Apple Pay Ditches Its Own “Buy Now, Pay Later” Feature, But Now You Can Pay Later with… Everyone Else?

So, Apple decided to kill off Apple Pay Later, their “buy now, pay later” service. Apparently splitting your iPhone payments into four installments wasn’t cutting it anymore. But don’t worry, they’ve replaced it with… a bunch of other “buy now, pay later” services!

Apple Pay Klarna

If you’re using iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, you can now pick from a menu of “Other Cards & Pay Later Options” when you use Apple Pay. This is where you’ll find lovely options like Klarna and Affirm, both offering their own versions of splitting up your payments. Klarna’s even offering a “Pay in 4” plan similar to what Apple Pay Later used to offer. So basically, Apple’s saying, “We don’t want to be in the ‘buy now, pay later’ business… but we’ll happily let these other companies do it for you, through us!”

Apple also announced that they’re teaming up with PayPal. Starting next year, you’ll supposedly be able to see your PayPal balance in the Wallet app if you’re using a PayPal debit card. I guess they figured if they can’t beat them, they might as well join them (sort of).

It’s a little like a restaurant getting rid of their own homemade lemonade and instead offering you Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, and Fanta. Sure, you still have options, but it feels a bit… corporate, doesn’t it?
