Ali Abbasi explains initial Trump donor backing for The Apprentice

“The Apprentice” Almost Didn’t Get Released Because of Trump

Did you know that the movie about Donald Trump, called “The Apprentice,” almost didn’t see the light of day? Yeah, it was initially funded by a company connected to a Trump supporter, and things got messy when they saw a scene they didn’t like. Apparently, they wanted to make changes even though they’d already approved the script.

This whole situation highlights a big problem with how indie movies get funded in the US. Director Ali Abbasi, who’s from Europe, was shocked that there’s no government funding for films in America. This means filmmakers often have to rely on big studios or wealthy individuals, which can lead to situations like this where the financiers try to influence the movie.

Abbasi pointed out that it’s tough to find billionaires in the US who haven’t donated to either the Republicans or Democrats, implying that getting funding without political strings attached is nearly impossible. In the end, “The Apprentice” did get released thanks to a new distributor, but it’s a reminder of the challenges filmmakers face when trying to maintain their artistic vision in a system heavily influenced by money and politics.
