Did Elon Musk’s Tesla Rip Off “I, Robot” Designs?
Hold on to your positronic brains, because it seems like Elon Musk might have borrowed a few design cues from Alex Proyas’ “I, Robot” for Tesla’s latest robot prototypes. Proyas himself took to X (formerly Twitter) to call out the similarities between his 20-year-old film’s designs and Tesla’s Cybercab and Robovan.
This isn’t exactly a surprise given Musk’s tendency to pull inspiration (or is it appropriation?) from science fiction. Remember the Cybertruck’s supposed “Bladerunner” aesthetic? But what’s particularly interesting here is that Musk is trying to sell a dystopian future – self-driving vehicles that, based on Tesla’s track record, might be prone to accidents – as something desirable.
So, while Tesla’s robot designs might look cool, it’s worth remembering the potential consequences of this push towards automation and the ethical questions that arise when a billionaire tries to make “I, Robot” a reality. And let’s not forget Tesla’s history of overpromising and underdelivering when it comes to futuristic tech. Maybe we should focus on getting steering wheels that stay attached before we start worrying about robot uprisings.
