10 hours in line for the Criterion Closet was worth every excruciating second

Spend 10 Hours in a Closet? For Criterion, Fans Did Just That!

The Criterion Collection, known for its prestigious film library, celebrated its 40th anniversary in a unique way – they took their famous “Closet” on the road! This “Closet,” typically a room where celebrities pick their favorite Criterion films, was transformed into a mobile experience at the New York Film Festival. Fans, eager to participate in a tradition usually reserved for the likes of Willem Dafoe and Winona Ryder, lined up for hours (some as long as 10!) for a chance to spend a mere 3 minutes inside.

The event was a testament to Criterion’s growing popularity, particularly among younger audiences, thanks to recent “Closet Picks” appearances from stars like Ayo Edebiri and Callum Turner. The long wait didn’t deter passionate fans who came prepared with chairs, books, and a whole lot of patience.

Criterion President Peter Becker was present throughout, engaging with fans and acknowledging the unexpectedly long wait times. The event even saw surprise appearances from notable filmmakers like David Cronenberg, Isabella Rossellini, and Ari Aster, further highlighting the “Closet’s” appeal.

Inside the mobile “Closet,” participants were greeted by an impressive collection of 1500 DVDs, a testament to Criterion’s dedication to film preservation. Each visitor received Criterion-branded goodies and, of course, the chance to select their own DVD picks, capturing the moment with a Polaroid.

Though the experience was ultimately about choosing DVDs that could be easily purchased elsewhere, it offered fans a unique opportunity to connect with Criterion’s legacy and share a space previously occupied by their film idols. The long wait, for many, was a small price to pay for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
